Rev. John K. Ottley III, Minister of Adult Outreach at Grace, grew up in Marietta, GA.  He met his wife in college in Chattanooga, TN and has a degree in Semitics and Old Testament Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary in Texas.   John has almost thirty years of pastoral ministry experience.  He served local churches in Texas, Georgia, Canada, Illinois and Iowa before joining the Grace staff.  He’s been married to Kathleen for thirty-two years.  They have four children and four grandchildren (with another grandchild on the way).

John loves reading, running and riding his bike.  He loves wrestling with his grandchildren.  He’s had lots of rock climbing, hiking and mountaineering adventures in California and Colorado.  He’s also been on Mt. Olympus and Mt. Rainier in Washington and climbed a 19,000 foot peak in Ecuador.  He’s been on short-term mission trips to Mexico, Central America, Ireland, Ecuador and Peru.

More About Me

What do you do at Grace Evan?

It’s my great pleasure to serve the Lord Jesus Christ by using the gifts God gave me to teach His Word and love His people!  I’m teaching the Carpenter’s Class, overseeing pastoral care and helping Chris Leuck with Men’s Ministry.

Are you a northerner or southerner?

I’m “Ambi-Regional.”  I grew up in the south and have lived in the north for over twenty years.

Your favorite book, movie, music?

My short-list of favorite authors includes Larry Woiwode (say “why-woody”), Tim Keller, J. I. Packer, Walker Percy and Robert Coles.  Recent books I enjoyed were Dickens’ “Little Dorrit” and “Silence” by Shusaku Endo.  Favorite movies include:  “The Mission,” “Pathfinder (1987),” “Cyrano de Bergerac (1990),” “A River Runs Through It,” “Ghost Town,” “Touching The Void,” “Lonesome Dove” and “The Fighter.”  I’ve been listening to a lot of jazz lately.  I also like Paul Simon, Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers.

Family?

Four children.  Four grandchildren (and one on the way):  Graham & Sarah live near Yosemite National Park.  Jon & Haverlee, Bennett & Dawson live in Des Moines, Iowa.  Seth & Bethany, Piper & Quinn live in Des Moines.  Claire will be a sophomore at Drake University in Des Moines majoring in musical theater.
